Venture Description

My venture is a community that engages young adult Center City Jews where they are. For many young adults, a shul can be an intimidating 4+ walls. On the first Friday of most months, Moed provides an opportunity to welcome Shabbat downtown, outside of a synagogue. A Moed Shabbat evening includes schmoozing, a soulful service led by Rabbi Rachel Kobrin and accompanied by various musicians, and a vegetarian dinner from local restaurants. The service is song, prayer and niggun-based; high on ruach and low on formality. One of Judaism’s foundations is Community, and Shabbat is its open door. 90 people walked through that door at the most recent event, some whom celebrate Shabbat regularly, and some whom would otherwise not be touched by organized Jewish life. Moed is filling a need for many and just getting started! Moed is a project of Congregation Adath Jeshurun in Elkins Park.

About the Founder

As a transplant by way of everywhere, Cody has fallen in love with Philly and its Jewish communities. Though Cody became a Bar Mitzvah at age 13, he really started cultivating his relationship with Judaism 10 years ago, after discovering Moishe House Philadelphia. Today, he thrives while working with others in Jewish community engagement. In furthering his Jewish learning and leadership development, Cody was selected for the 2016-18 Philadelphia Cohort of the Wexner Heritage Program. Cody and his spouse Arielle are both active volunteer leaders in local, regional and international organizations for Jewish life, learning and philanthropy.
