The Hamantaschen Monologues

The fourth annual Hamantaschen Monologues is here, and this year for the first time ever, it’s coming to PHILLY! Partnering with Tribe 12, IKAR Tribe, JQ International, and the Weitzman National Museum of American Jewish History, we’ll be coming to you LIVE from our main in-person event from Philadelphia, at our live Watch Party in LA, and virtually from anywhere across the country.

Join us for a night of storytelling about how our relationships to sex, sexuality, and bodies are informed and misinformed by Judaism.

Wait, what’s the Hamantaschen Monologues? We’re going to fill you in on a lil secret: our favorite purim snack, the Hamantaschen, is not based on Haman’s ears or hat, but is actually historically associated with sex, sexuality, and bodies. That’s right, this WHOLE time when you were noshin’ on ‘tashin you’ve been salivating over Judaism’s most sultry secret. While there are times when our 5,000-year-old tradition may be prudish, Purim most definitely is NOT then. It’s a time to masquerade, to unveil, to expose and give light to true selves and true stories. Enters… The Hamantaschen Monologues! HamMons is a live storytelling event about personal relationships to Judaism, sex, bodies, and sexuality. Now in our fourth year, we’ve brought together over 25 storytellers and 400+ listeners to embrace the tenderness, messiness, humor, and authenticity that is the Hamantaschen Monologues. We hope you join us.

What should I expect at the Philly event? Arrive between 7-8pm for a kosher dessert bar by House of Kosher (with hamentaschen, of course), drink selections including, wine, beer, seltzer and non-alcoholic beverages, and interactive activities to engage with the characters of Purim and meet other folks in attendance! These low key icebreakers will be led by Tribe 12’s Executive Director Rabbi Megan GoldMarche and Rabbinic intern Molly Paul and are of course optional. At 8pm, we will move into the Dell Theater to hear from our storytellers — four live, four virtually — and share in an intimate, fun and powerful experience together. The event is a 21+ space and open to speakers and listeners of all backgrounds, affiliations, gender identities, sexual orientations, bodies, and relationships to Judaism.

Tribe 12 connects people in their 20s/30s to Jewish life and community in Philadelphia today so they will choose to stay connected tomorrow. We welcome people who identify as Jewish, whose partner is Jewish, or who are exploring Judaism. Tribe 12 seeks to include all individuals regardless of gender or identity expression, religious history and practice, and financial circumstances. We strive to host inclusive, accessible events that enable all individuals, including disabled individuals, to engage fully. If you require any accommodations please see our page on accommodations.
