Liwetan: Javanese Ritual Feast

Join us at long table lined with banana leaves, covered with steamed rice and assorted Indonesian dishes. No need for utensils, this feast is eaten with your right hand. Don’t worry, PFP staff member, Sinta, will walk you through it! She’ll share about her own experiences enjoying a Liwetan feast with her community.

Liwetan is a tradition from East Java, Indonesia, to mark a special ritual, life stage or for celebration. Typically, friends and families gather to enjoy foods served on banana leaves, which enhance the aroma and aesthetic of the food! The Liwetan feast usually includes 6 courses served together: rice, variety of side dishes, sambal chilli, cracker, vegetables & meat.

Proceeds from the Philadelphia Folklore Project dinner will go towards advancing our mission to sustain vital and diverse living cultural heritage in communities in our region through collaborative projects, research, documentation and education, prioritizing folk and traditional arts in service of social change.

Seats are limited so make sure you book yours NOW!
