Shtetl Skills: Pickling 101

February 17, 2021 by Ross Weisman

Pickling has a long history in Jewish preservation, culturally and culinarily. In this workshop, you’ll learn how to make the traditional half-sour pickle through lacto-fermentation as well as the instant gratification of quick-pickling any vegetable of your choosing! A materials and ingredients list will be sent to everyone who registers before the event.

Meet your educator
Davinica Nemtzow (She/they) is Tribe 12’s Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Associate and leads our Shtetl Skills and LGBTQIA+ tribes. Originally from the Berkshires, Davinica is a certified Kripalu Mindful Outdoor Guide, community organizer, environmental artist, and avid homesteader. You’ll often find her nurturing her vegetable garden, transforming her home into a low-waste and plant-based space, or stopping to look at every interesting leaf she finds (aka all of them).

What is Shtetl Skills?
Shtetl Skills a series of monthly workshops that promote practical, ancestral, and sustainable skills rooted in Jewish traditions and land connection.

Shtetl Skills: Tu B’Shvat Mindful Outdoor Experience

January 23, 2021 by Davinica Nemtzow

Tu B’Shvat has been celebrated for millennia the “New Year of the Trees” and has been important to Jewish farmers and mystics alike. Instead of marking the occasion with a seder, we’ll come together via Zoom from wherever you can experience nature— whether it’s a hiking/walking trail, a city park, or even your backyard.

What to expect

In this Mindful Outdoor Experience, we’ll observe the world through some gentle movement, mindful breathing, and sensory exercises that help us connect to our local trees. Then, we’ll have some space for a silent meditation so you can tune into the sounds of nature. Afterwards, we’ll come back together for a sharing circle and group discussion about the Jewish traditions surrounding trees.

What you need

–  A natural space where you can step away into the “more-than-human world” would be ideal, but maintaining safety and following the CDC guidelines about social distancing are the priority. There’s still so much to learn from the tree outside your building!

–  A phone to connect to the Zoom call, headphones, and perhaps a portable battery pack if you have one

–  Bundle up! There’s no such thing as bad weather, just bad clothes. If you usually avoid spending time outside during the winter, check out this video to help you layer appropriately. We’ll only be out for about 1-1.5 hours but this is a good habit to get into!

–  Don’t forget your mask!

Shtetl Skills: Chocolate Tasting

December 12, 2019 by Davinica Nemtzow

Are you interested in living more sustainably? Do you want to learn a new skill? In each monthly Shtetl Skills workshop, you’ll be able to take home new skills from local professional farmers, herbalists, bakers, and chefs that align with the themes of the Hebrew calendar and connect to living more sustainably.

Our final Shtetl Skills workshop for the season will be a chocolate tasting with Shane Confectionery on December 12. Their chocolate maker will guide us through various chocolate styles, exploring different flavor notes and idiosyncrasies. In this traditional style tasting, you’ll have a chance to chat one-on-one with an expert, and leave with newfound knowledge about cacao cultivation and process, as well as the history and craft of chocolate. We’ll be tying this into Shtetl Skills by talking about what it means to responsibly source your food, understanding the importance of supporting local businesses, and how we can make our Hanukkah celebrations more sustainable.
Tickets for this event are usually $28, but we’re offering them for our community for $20.
Ticket sales close on December 5 and there are limited spots, so register ASAP!
Reserve your spot before Thanksgiving and get 20% off with the code ATTITUDEOFGRATITUDE

Are you interested in living more sustainably? Do you want to learn a new skill?

In the spirit of Tishrei, we’ll be learning how to make our own hanging planters from Chelsea Doland from NYAI Wood Craft. You’ll leave this workshop with a new skill, a new planter, AND a new succulent to bring some green into your space while the world goes into hibernation outside.
