Purim Events around Town

Purim is the only holiday where getting drunk is basically a mitzvah. We’re going to retell the story of Esther and Haman and you’re supposed to drink so much that you can’t tell the difference between the good guys and the bad guys. Its like Halloween and St Patrick’s Day had a baby with that special Jewish “They Tried To Kill Us, We Survived, Let’s Drink!” flare. It’s like the second best Jewish holidays (personally, I’m partial to Passover… More on that soon!)

Purim is just under two weeks away, officially starting at sundown on Feb 28th. And if you’re anything like us, you’re trying to check out as many Purim events as possible… So here is the must-see list Purim events coming up in in Philly:

1. Social Justice Purim on Thursday, Feb 22nd

Repair the World, Philly FIGHT, Grad Student Network, and WOAR team up to bring you discussions about consent, a hands-on volunteering opportunity, and a cookie/hamantaschen swap.

2. Rising Tide: Purim Satire for the Revolution on Saturday, Feb 24th

Kol Tzedek brings together POWER, New Sanctuary Movement of Philadelphia, Jewish Farm School, Jewish Voice for Peace – Philadelphia, and Tikkun Olam Chavurah to bring you this awesome party/performance combo featuring The Shushan $#!T Show! The best part? Your ticket price for the event benefits the Philly Community Bail Fund.

3. Monte Carlo Masquerade on Wednesday, Feb 28th

This event is a big hit every year! This year is the third annual epic bash, live concert, black tie, casino night hosted by The Chevra, the Grad Student Network, Moishe House Philly, and Tribe 12. Last year’s event sold out at 500 people – make sure to get tickets early for this one.

4. A Very Broadway Purim on Thursday, Mar 1st – Saturday, Mar 3rd

Drink like it’s St. Patrick’s Day, dress up like it’s Halloween, and enjoy the interactive musical by the geniuses behind A Very Awesome Purim! (Including 2018 Tribe 12 Fellow, Josh Silverbauer.) This year the boisterous sing-a-long will range from “Defying Tyranny” to “La Vie Purim.” You can expect the best of Broadway with some hamantaschen flavor and plenty of surprises along the way. There are three showings this year and they’ll likely all sell out, so get your tickets in advance!

You may have noticed we have some killer resources over on our digital hub, gobejewish.com. Maybe you’ve seen our job board or our directory of all Jewish orgs in Philly who work with 20s / 30s… Of all the awesome features on gobejewish.com, our favorite is definitely the community events calendar. The gobejewish calendar aggregates all Jewish events for Philly’s 20s / 30s IN ONE PLACE.

It’s looking like an awesome Purim lineup this year… and these are just the highlights! Check gobejewish.com for the full Purim events listing.
